You can see the story of Jonny’s swim here:
Captain Jonathan Linares RE decided to take on the enormous challenge of swimming the Channel solo in July 2012 to raise funds for the Afghan Appeal Fund and the Army Benevolent Fund. The swim consists of 21 miles (34 km) in 16°C water and across the world’s busiest shipping seaway which separates Dover from the French Coast. There are of course rules: no wetsuit, and he cannot touch a boat or person during the crossing.
