December 2009: a youngster from Rhine Garrison has become the lucky winner of the Afghan Appeal Fund’s JHQ Monopoly board. Callum Shields aged 9, a pupil at St Andrew’s on JHQ, bought 2 tickets at the Multi National Charity Fund Bazaar. After his winning ticket was drawn by General Sir David and Lady Caroline Richards, he now has a permanent reminder of the streets and roads that are familiar to him and his family.

Dad Martin who serves with Support Troop Royal Engineers and Mum Tammy a Support Officer at HQ Rhine Garrison are ‘dead chuffed’ with the iconic game and explained that when the AAF dropped off the game Callum was already in bed. “We never said anything,” said Tammy. “Just waited for him to open the box the following morning. It was really funny he had to pinch himself to see if it was real.” A rather shell shocked Callum was asked what it was like to own the well sought after family board game and he summed it up in one word – “wow!”

The family were loading the car ready to head off to UK for the festive season when we persuaded Callum to pop over for his photo call.  And it was great to hear that the box had already been stowed away in preparation for a unique monopoly battle with relations in Blighty.

WELL DONE CALLUM!

The Afghan Appeal Fund would like to thank all those that have supported the charity this year and wish you a peaceful Christmas.

Previously: the Afghan Appeal Fund scores a hat-trick!

In 2007, we brought you the British Army Top Trumps pack, in 2008 it was ‘My Daddy is a Soldier” and now for 2009 the Afghan Appeal Fund introduces a unique product to commemorate a bit of history. As the British presence west of the Rhine winds down, The Afghan Appeal Fund’s JHQ Monopoly Game features the streets and schools you know so well.  From Beresford Road through Auckland, Londonderry and Roxburgh to Foster and Cheshire Houses, we bring the Monopoly board to BFG. With the classic game-play, familiar boot, top-hat and battleship pieces and new street names to represent our very own community, what better game to play this Christmas?

This is a fantastic prize - the set comes in a beautifully presented metal box with wooden houses and hotels, and nice traditional metal counters.
